Kinja'd!!!

California Air Resources Board (CARB) is a scam. If they cared about air quality, they wouldn’t prevent companies like Magnaflow from shipping catalytic converters into the state when there are plenty of 100% compliant reasons to use them: pre-1974 vehicles, kit cars, off-road vehicles / race cars.

Now, I understand that this isn’t a huge number of people but the outright bullshit hoops that I have to go through to get an OPTIONAL catalytic converter is insane. All I want is a normal high-ish flow universal cat (MagnaFlow 59955) . My options are:

- Drive to Nevada to buy one

- Ship to friend/family and have them re-ship it to me

- Use a sketchy re-shipping service

Why not buy a CA approved catalytic converter? Well, let me put it like this: If I offered you two identical sets of grippy tires but one had a tiny little penis drawn on the inside of the tire (facing the air between tire and wheel), would you pay me twice as much for the one with the tiny little penis?

Case in point: the only difference between these two parts is that one has an EO number stamped into the outside.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Why? “Because testing isn’t free”

So you might be saying “well those prices don’t look so bad. It’s just $115 more. ”

But watch what happens when you step up to OBD2 cars...

Kinja'd!!!

Still not to...

Kinja'd!!!

Oh dear god. What the greenwashing fur tree is going on here? Communism. That’s what.

CARB is whatever, but they’re not allowed to ship it to you? That’s bullshit. It’s like getting specialty wine shipped here to PA...

Solutions: pre-cat cars,  diesel cars

Or leave CA ;)

counterpoint - Magnaflow is a scam, they could/should sell both of those items for the same price, since we know they are 100% identical in cost and performance. They are hiding behind a paper tiger to justify their highway robbery and they should be shamed for it, just like the drug companies with their crocodile tea rs about FDA testing costs forcing them to charge high drug prices while they pocket BILLIONS in profits...

I’ll draw some dicks on it for free, if that helps.

Fair warning though - I’m not an artist.

Yes, that sucks. The carb certified cats will usually have a higher loading of materials that allow them to pass. Unfortunately, people will try to cheat and buy the non certified which in most cases has worse performance. Even though the packaging looks the same, I can almost guarantee you what you can’t see is different.

It’s not just Magnaflow. There’s a heavy cost to the buckets of palm grease that you need to navigate the California EO process.

From what I’ve read, that was true in the 90s and early 2000s but today, isn’t generally the case on direct replacements by legitimate manufacturers.

Yep. You can get blow-your-hands-off and burn-down-your-neighborhood fireworks delivered but not a catalytic converter.

In my case, only the latter would work. I can legally run catless on the exocet but I’m sick of the smell.

Still happens, the materials are really expensive. I know one  of the manufacturers.

I know I’ve mentioned it before but I am still pissed about CARB and the E12 530i that I wanted to buy. It used thermal reactors, which aren’t the most efficient things around. That, and they’re almost impossible to find. I wanted to redo the exhaust system and incorporate a catalytic converter, something that would have made the car cleaner than stock. I grew up in California in the darkest days of the smog problem so I know about dirty air. I wasn’t trying to pollute, but was trying to save a classic old sedan from the scrapper by making it cleaner than stock, a solution that I (mistakenly) assumed would be cheaper than finding OEM parts . After getting the bureaucratic runaround and being told that it would cost thousands to get this approved I gave up. Some of us want the combination of a classic car that is actually clean and efficient,  but CA would rather that you didn’t bother. Fuck ‘em. If I ever move back there I’m buying something pre-1975 and modifying the crap out of it just to spite those motherfuckers.

Ironically my cats failed on my Subaru about thee months after moving to Nevada. I was able to buy a bolt on cat and mid pipe for less than $200. Couldn’t have done that in CA. So yes go to Reno and buy the one you want.

I don’t think that’s true. I think CARB sticker  testing adds like $80 to the cost of most stuff, beyond that it’s got to be the material load. There’s a reason OEM cats are $1200 and aftermarket are $80. The latter is just a coffee can.

What kind of loophole allows the exocet to go without a cat?

Kinja'd!!! Nick Has an Exocet > 3point8isgreat
07/07/2020 at 11:59

Kinja'd!!!0

Not a loophole. California limits the number of kit cars per year and did an environmental study that found with the low number of miles driven, it made no significant difference. On the flip side, having to get ref'd every year (because smog techs are basically Walmart sticker people), it would be too annoying to the state and owner.

Kinja'd!!! 3point8isgreat > Nick Has an Exocet
07/07/2020 at 12:41

Kinja'd!!!0

Is that a limit on total # of kit cars, or just new kit cars?  If it’s a limit on total # of kit cars per year is there some sort of weird rush to register your car before all the slots are taken?  Doing that sounds outlandish, but it’s also California so I can’t actually be sure.

Kinja'd!!! Nick Has an Exocet > 3point8isgreat

5 00 kit cars per year. There’s not a huge rush as there has never been a year (aside from the 1st year) that they hit the limit.
